How do I squeeze the roots through that hole?

This will probably sound dumb, but I just can't visualize how I am going to push my tomato plant's ball of roots through the hole I cut in the bucket. Is there a trick to this or is it just going to be a big mess? I am mostly worried about breaking roots off while cramming them through the hole. Thanks for any advice!
