I was so impressed with this idea that I ran right out and got everything I needed. First of all you can get free buckets with lids at restaurants. Pickles come in five gallon buckets with lids. They gave me two for free!!! Next I bought the Potting Mix. I bought a 2 cubic foot bag which cost me around $12. That completely filled both five gallon pails with a little left over. I filled the first pail to about 1" from the top. I broke up the clumps and tamped the soil lightly. And yes I remembered the coffee filter (brilliant idea of Todd's to use the coffee filter.) Next I put the lid on using another coffee filter to cover the hole, making sure that the cover was on tight. I was impressed that the first coffee filter slipped rith out through the hole. I made a hole in the soil and dropped in the plant. I carefully watered though the hole and at this point I realized that I should have used more dirt in the beginning. Moral of the story. Fill the dirt all the way to just below where the lid will fit. Its very hard to get the dirt into the little hole after. The other thing that I found out from the nursery where I bought the tomato plants is that there are two different kinds of tomato plants. The first kind is indeterminate. This type of plant will grow and grow. Eventually your upside down tomato would reach the ground. The other kind is determinate. This would be a bush type plant. Todd recommends Celebrity tomatoes which are a determinate type plant. My grower did not have Celebrity plants so I bought Legacy which is determinate and supposed to be good slicing and the fruit should be medium sized. Well wish me luck. My husband thinks that I am crazy to plant my tomatoes upside down. We'll see who is laughing in about two months.
