Usually watering too much you get brown leaves and die-back. Not watering enough you get limp wilty leaves and eventually die-back. It is something you have to get into a groove with your plants on. The going suggestion on this message board is about 2 inches of water a week and have some period of drying between the waterings so the ground is not always saturated. I have found that putting some plain water in a sprayer bottle from the dollar store and spritzing the plants and stems makes them happy as well. Mine are on a 3rd floor porch and don't get the morning dew, so I try to replace that in the evenings this way.

I would suggest finding one of the many books on tomato growing or container vegetable gardening and see what someone who gets paid to know these things thinks as well.
