The soil mix I don't know a lot about, so in my case I bought potting soil mix. Someone else has to comment on that. I personally don't think drainage holes are a good idea. On a regular upside-down planter, you will get a lot of drainage from extra water down thru the main hole where the plant comes out. I have built planters with an extension around the hole to make a reservoir that stores water so that I don't have to water as often. Talk on here for people with regular style planters they are watering every other day. Someone else will comment I'm sure. If you want to know more about my planter you can look at my blog, there are links on several other comments to it. As far a a shepherds hook, with water and plant with fruit your 5 gallon planter will approach 60 pounds, so it has to be really strong. Also if you are planning on using the plastic handles people have has those fail, you may want some appropriate rope or chain capable of holding that weight. Have fun. I'm about to post some new pics of my daughters tomatoes on that same blog. Give us some pictures when you get there. _|I/V\ C.
